MY COMPETENCIES AND PROJECTS

Loro Parque

I already did volunteer work in different places, this one was in Tenerife, Spain. I worked as a Tourist Guide in a Zoo called Loro Parque, number 1 Zoo in the World, according to TripAdvisor. My job was to take groups of people to show them the park. I had to learn a script and a specific way that I had to follow. I used to do the tours in German, but if I wanted I could learn the script in English or Spanish too to make the tours. My groups were from 10 to 20 people per tour and it took one and a half hours. I liked doing this volunteer work because my mother was also working on the Zoo and it was a nice place to stay. As my tour advanced, I used to tell them something special about every animal and gave some time for them to take pictures and appreciate it. By the end of the tour, the guests thanked me and sometimes gave me tips for my work, it was always exciting! I worked there for 3 months, 4 hours a day and it was a cool experience to show me how companies work and how to deal with big groups. I hope I can go back there sometime to work again because it was a really nice experience.

Brunelli's

At the end of the year 2019 and the beginning of 2020, I did volunteer work at the Restaurant Brunelli's which is owned by the same owner of Loro Parque. I worked as a Hostess and my job was to promote the restaurant and invite people walking on the street to come inside the restaurant and guide them to their table. This way the Restaurant gets more clients and more known. I worked for up to 3 hours a day and received a small lunch. The languages I speak helped me a lot, as Tenerife is a very diversified island and many tourists visit it. I used mainly German, English and Spanish to talk to the people and I feel like they listen to you more when you speak to them in their own language. Sometimes I even got tips, but it was rare to happen. For me, it was an interesting experience as I have never done this before and I could overcome my fear of talking to strangers. I was able to go back and work for the same person I have worked the last year, and this makes me happy because I like this company's working environment and it shows that they liked the work I have done in the Zoo the last year.

HOW DID I GET INTO THE VOLUNTEER JOBS?

When I moved to Tenerife one of the first things that caught my attention was the Loro Parque. An immense embassy of animals considered the best Zoo in the world for many consecutive years that is located right next to my house. I have always thought of working there somewhere to gain experience in this area. I submitted my application of volunteer two years after my arrival on the island because then I could speak Spanish more fluently as well. I think some of the things that helped me get the job were my persistence in sending applications and the fact that I speak four fluent languages which helped me because Loro Parque is a place full of tourists. After my application was sent, I received a letter telling me that I was chosen to participate in a face-to-face interview with the head of the tour department Julie Dixon. The interview went smoothly and Julie liked my sympathy and told me I could start working the next week. I felt proud that I could achieve such an honored job all by myself. I ended working in Loro Parque for three consecutive months and it was one of the best experiences I could have had to enhance my knowledge on how to deal with big groups of people and to stay calm in stressful situations. I would definitely go back and work there if the possibility arises.
